synopsis
Based on Ángeles Mastretta’s homonymous novel, it narrates the life of Catalina Guzmán and General Andrés Ascensio, her husband, who is an ambitious, unscrupulous revolutionary leader, in the city of Puebla in 1932. He becomes Governor of the state of Puebla and a strong contender for Mexico’s Presidency but is betrayed by his friends, and so his desire for power is frustrated. This is the story of his political failure and a marriage full of luxury and unhappiness prolonged only by self-interest and routine, until Catalina decides to break stereotypes and take her life into her own hands, yet doesn’t guard herself against the General’s pathological megalomania and killer instincts.
